Pixel Gladiator:
Introduction:
"Pixel Gladiator," originally known as "Gladiator" in Japan and also referred to as "Ougon no Shiro" (which translates to "Golden Castle"), is an arcade video game that was developed by Allumer and published by Taito in 1986. It later received a sequel titled "Blandia." Home versions of "Gladiator" were made available for the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, and Commodore 64 under the title "Great Gurianos." Notably, the ZX Spectrum version of the game was deliberately designed to be extremely challenging.
In "Pixel Gladiator," players take control of a gladiator or knight character named Great Gurianos, guiding them as they traverse a castle environment. Movement is managed using a joystick, allowing the character to move left and right while also adjusting the position of their shield. The game utilizes three buttons for combat, enabling high, medium, and low sword attacks with Great Gurianos's weapon. "Pixel Gladiator" comprises four distinct levels, and players are rewarded with a fifth stage, known as the "Treasure Place," upon successfully completing the game.
Gameplay:
Gameplay in "Pixel Gladiator" is divided into two modes. In the "obstacle" mode, players navigate Great Gurianos through a forward-scrolling environment, where they must employ their sword and shield to defend against various flying hazards, including bats, fireballs, arrows, shuriken, and other airborne threats. Interspersed within the "obstacle" mode are segments known as "fight" mode, where Great Gurianos engages in combat with another knight similarly clad in armor.
In both modes, if Great Gurianos sustains an unprotected hit, a portion of his armor is lost, with high hits affecting his helmet, middle hits targeting his breastplate, and low hits focusing on his leggings. A subsequent hit to the same area results in the character's demise. During the obstacle phases, players have the ability to generate a temporary force field by rapidly moving the shield up and down when facing incoming weapons or bats. Additionally, during combat phases, Great Gurianos can briefly become invulnerable, indicated by a flashing golden appearance.
